Having used and examined lots of gems, but never needed to write and publish my own, I wanted to learn how the process works on RubyGems.
I didn't have my own use case at the time, but saw a value in making it easy for organizations within the NHS to be able to use quick, simple Rails apps for record keeping.
I created and published a gem which adds an ActiveRecord validator to Rails, and works independently as a plain Ruby class.
It's well tested with rspec, and does one thing, really reliably.
